Captain Marvel Concept Art Reveals Different Supreme Intelligence Design

Two pieces of concept art showing the early designs for Captain Marvel‘s Supreme Intelligence emerge online. Played by Annette Bening in the film, the Supreme Intelligence is the Kree leader usually depicted as a green head in the pages of the comic books. But Marvel Studios gave the character a human form to make it palatable for general audiences.

Debuting Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel is the first female-headlined superhero in the MCU. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the narrative takes place in 1995 allowing fans to see young (still two-eyed) Nick Fury (Sam Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) back when they were still S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. Tackling the Kree-Skrull war, the project also introduced a slew of new characters such as members of the Starforce – Kree’s elite squad, Yon Rogg (Jude Law) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Captain Marvel was the last in the franchise’s roster before the culminating film, Avengers: Endgame released which officially saw the most powerful character in the universe join the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against Thanos.

Bening played dual characters in Captain Marvel. She initially brought Doctor Wendy Lawson – a gender-swapped version of Dr. Walter Lawson aka. Mar-Vell to life. But due to how the film’s narrative plays out, she’s also the embodiment of the Supreme Intelligence dressed in her Kree warrior uniform. But apparently, early designs for the character depicted her as ethereal, sporting a long gown and intricate head accessories, almost reminiscent of Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) mother, Frigga (Rene Russo) as revealed in new concept illustrations from artist Jackson Sze. Check out the images below shared on Instagram by the illustrator.

In Captain Marvel, Supreme Intelligence took on the form of Lawson knowing that they’d easily be able to manipulate Carol since she has some sort of memory with someone who looks like the Kree conniving leader. After her entanglement with Lawson and her secret project to help Talos and the Skrulls develop a hyper space technology that would allow them to escape the ruthless take over of their arch-nemesis, Carol was abducted to Hala after absorbing the energy from the ensuing explosion of Lawson’s tech. There, she was manipulated to become one of the members of the Starforce which was made easy with her not having any recollection of her past.

It doesn’t make much sense to have the Supreme Intelligence’s human form look like a queen mother rather than a fighter considering how it plays with the manipulation with Carol. Even if it was still Bening playing the role, it was just more effective to sell her the notion that the Kree leader is someone she can trust if she’s the embodiment of what she aspires to be – a capable fighter. There’s no mention of the Supreme Intelligence’s fate after Captain Marvel, but with Yon-Rogg surviving his battle with Carol, it’s not outside the realm of possibility to seem them in future MCU films.
